How is the Economy Affecting You?
We’re putting out this inaugural newsletter at a time in which the world and the economy seem to be reeling. Day to day, in our blog, we typically focus on core principles that never change. That’s important, because when we use these core truths as our tools, we are less vulnerable to the changing times. Yet, we live in this world and the things of this world do affect us, so hopefully this piece will bring you comfort and aid you in keeping your eye on the prize! This article might start a little bleak, but will end in the glory of Christ. Isn’t that always God’s way?
The economy has absolutely stalled. It is not in horrible shape. Recessions are a necessary part of a growing economy over time. Yet, our government has taken the stance of micromanaging many facets to try and control something that is completely outside of their control. Their meddling will lead to bigger problems, as such governmental intervention always does. Most economists recognize that the dramatic increase in the printing of money backed by nothing other than the “full faith and credit of the US Gov’t” will destroy that full faith and credit.
The corrupted leaders of Zimbabwe simply print more money whenever they want it, but everyone understands it’s just paper. Historically, our country has been more prudent than Zimbabwe and so people around the world have wanted to hold onto our dollars. That situation appears to be changing. Our best customer (lender) China has been saying that they do not appreciate the way we are handling our affairs.
The effects of these two things – a drastic rise in the amount of money and the desire of the world’s people to turn away from our currency – will lead to drastic inflation that destroys the value of the money that you have. That being said, I feel that this will take longer to happen than most people expect. For many decades the world’s people have looked at the U.S. as the safe place to put their money. Many of the world’s systems (pricing of commodities for instance) are based on the Dollar. So, in my opinion it will take longer for serious inflation to set in than many are thinking. I hope I’m wrong about inflation being a foregone conclusion, but it sems unavoidable eventually unless something serious changes.
When advising clients, we at Kingdom Calling absolutely talk about this risk, along with any other we can conceive of, and plan strategies to take advantage of this possible scenario. There are ways to make what will be a disaster for most Americans, something that brings more wealth to you.
I’ll speak briefly about the stock market (which is very different from the economy). I am not personally betting money in either direction, but my guess is that we have seen a strong bear market rally and that the stock market is bound to head down for a time before it is finally ready to begin a new bull market.
But the real question is, How is the economy affecting you?
Are you allowing the media to shape your feelings about your own security? Does the President or some other governmental authority have the power to make your life better or worse? God is using these times to shake people and wake them up to His reality and providence in their lives.
Don’t forget that God is your provider. He will take care of your every need. Are you seeking Him in this time to see what He is doing through the hard times? Or are you just focused on the hard times? Do you enjoy His perspective, which is most truthful and revealing, or are you following others or your own opinions?
“Then [at Mount Sinai] His voice shook the earth, but now He has given a promise: Yet once more I will shake and make tremble not only the earth but also the [starry] heavens. 27Now this expression, Yet once more, indicates the final removal and transformation of all [that can be] shaken–that is, of that which has been created–in order that what cannot be shaken may remain and continue. 28Let us therefore, receiving a kingdom that is firm and stable and cannot be shaken, offer to God pleasing service and acceptable worship, with modesty and pious care and godly fear and awe; 29For our God [is indeed] a consuming fire.” (Hebrews 12:26-29)
This time is part of God’s plan. To me, it is more and more evident that He is the one orchestrating everything. He has the final word, not the political or economical leaders of the day, who, in general, are simply fostering confusion, ignorance and self-will. God is bringing things into His order. I don’t believe that this is the final shaking or that Christ will return in the next couple years (I see more promises of scripture that still must be fulfilled), but I do see that God is waking His children and speaking very clearly to us about how to prepare and live in these times. The present shaking of the world causes panic and unrest amongst those who do not know Him, while at the same time, bringing a never before experienced closeness with God for those who seek Him in these times.
He is making ready His bride for the final harvest in order that we be the peace and refuge of God’s people amidst the chaos of this world and thus the Light of Life to those who are desperately seeking it. This all must happen. And its all great news.
So God is speaking to His people more clearly than ever before. The question I hope you ask yourself often is, “Am I listening?”
“However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.” (John 16:13-15)
God wants to guide you personally through these troubled times. But He needs you to seek Him in order to teach you. If you are not seeking Him, or are not learning what He is trying to show you, perhaps you need more shaking before you do. If that is what it takes for Him to truly have that relationship with you, He will do what is necessary to bring you home. But once you are there with Him, and have cast away all fears and have total trust, peace, and faith that He will take care of your every need, you will truly have Life as it is meant to be!
And this isn’t some super spiritual message that says, “Don’t worry, you don’t need money, you only need God.” God knows you need money and He will take care of you. Most of our incomes have not been impacted. Perhaps the only monetary damage has been to the market value of our assets. If this is the case, perhaps for some it will serve as a good wake up call not to gamble in markets you don’t understand. On the other hand, there are many people who have lost their jobs or income and who are scared. These are the times to seek God’s comfort and direction. He will not let you down.
“And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matthew 6:28-31)
He wants to take care of you both physically and spiritually. God wants to give to those who seek Him.
“For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!” (Luke 11: 10 – 13)
So the key is to follow and worship God. Draw close to Him and He will draw close to you. Put all other worries and concerns aside and truly worship the one who made you and all things. Sing His praises and ask Him to reveal Himself to you – even if that vision is different than you’ve ever imagined Him before. Go after God in these times, and this economic downturn will be the best thing that has ever happened to you.
This can be true for your both spiritually and financially. New wealth is always created out of recession. Opportunities abound when fear is everywhere. Old mistakes must be learned from and new wisdom applied. The Lord will bring out a new generation from these times. The key is to seek Him for what He is wanting to do in your life! Everything is possible with God.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me–put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.” (Php 4:4-9)
